The Afters has launched a new audio documentary series exploring the people, records, and experiences behind underground music culture. Its opening season focuses on Scott Ferguson, better known as Robot84, tracing his 35-year relationship with dance music.
Built around long-form storytelling, the series presents artists’ experiences in their own words, accompanied by their music. Its scope extends across house, Balearic, downtempo, and other styles connected to underground listening cultures.
The first season follows Ferguson’s journey from Scotland to London and Ibiza, examining the records, relationships, and experiences that shaped his musical identity.
A central part of the documentary addresses his recovery from an ischaemic stroke suffered on Boxing Day 2022 while visiting Gran Canaria. During his recovery, Ferguson shared an edit he had previously been holding back: ‘Get It Right Next Time’, credited to Robot84 vs The Raff.
In January 2023, Jon Sa Trinxa began playing the track at Café Mambo in Sydney. Hearing his music reach audiences while he was learning to walk again became an important source of confidence during his recovery.
The documentary also features contributions from Bill Brewster, Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Pete Gooding, and Jon Sa Trinxa, alongside Ferguson’s family and friends.
Scored almost entirely with Robot84’s productions, edits, and remixes, the portrait explores the relationship between creativity, identity, friendship, loss, and resilience.
The music accompanying the documentary is also collected in ‘Finding The Rhythm Again – The Records’, available through Robot84’s Bandcamp. Stream and download here.
