Photographer Mark McNulty is bringing more than three decades of nightlife photography together in ‘In Clubland: 35 Summers of Love’, a 240-page retrospective published by Modern Sky on November 5, 2026. The book features more than 550 rarely seen photographs documenting dancefloor culture from 1990 through the present day.
Beginning at Liverpool’s Quadrant Park, the archive moves through clubs and parties including BackII Basics in Leeds, Berlin’s Tresor, The Hacienda, Cream, Bristol’s The Lakota, and Nottingham’s Heavenly Social. The collection also features appearances from Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers, alongside scenes from Italy and Germany.
More than 190 pages are dedicated to reproductions of McNulty’s photographs, accompanied by his recollections of the people, places, and periods represented. Moving beyond the 1990s, ‘In Clubland: 35 Summers of Love’ also documents Garlands, Bugged Out! at Nation, Club EVOL at EBGB’s, Southport soul all-nighters, Creamfields, and Liverpool’s 2023 Eurovision celebrations, including the all-female lineup of Girls Don’t Sync.
“My nightclub years are well and truly behind me, and late-night capers are mostly a thing of the past,” says McNulty. “But people of all ages are still going out at night, and the scenes that we thought were ours have just evolved and changed. The world carries on, and the discotheque most certainly doesn’t stop for anybody.”
The publication marks Modern Sky’s first venture into book publishing and follows retrospective exhibitions of McNulty’s archive at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool and Oriel Colwyn. Several of his photographs are also being exhibited as part of the British Culture Archive’s ‘The 90’s: Art & Fashion’ exhibition at Tate Britain.
‘In Clubland: 35 Summers of Love’ will be issued in two limited first editions: 100 hardback copies accompanied by a signed limited-edition print and 303 softback copies.
